MAIMANA (PAN): A director of the mines department was abducted along with two of his subordinates and their driver killed in the northern province of Faryab, officials said on Wednesday.
Eng. Shah Wali was kidnapped in the Quram Qul district on his way from Andkhoi to Maimana on Tuesday evening, the provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Nabi Jan Mullahkhel, told Pajhwok Afghan News.
In the absence of highway policemen who had returned to their checkpoints, the Taliban opened fire on the driver when he did not stop the car. Later, they abducted the director of mines along with two other employees of the department.
They were trying to secure the release of the officials with the mediation of tribal elders, said the district chief, Abdul Wahid Nasiri.
But a Taliban spokesman, Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, claimed responsibility for kidnapping three intelligence agents from Quram Qul district.
