Afghans offer prayers to mark Eidul Adha

KABUL): Afghans across the country offered prayers of Eidul Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice to celebrate the first day of the religious festival with zeal, fervour and festivity, amid special prayers for peace and stability in the war-torn country.

The prayers were offered in mosques and Eid Gahs in the central capital Kabul and other main cities in a peaceful environment killed the provincial governor, Arsala Jamal.

Another at least 18 people were injured in the explosion that occurred when the governor was making a speech after offering Eid prayers in Pul-i-Alam, the provincial capital. Officials said the explosives had been planted in a microphone.

President Hamid Karzai, some Cabinet ministers, lawmakers and senior government officials offered Eid prayers at the mosque in the Presidential Palace in Kabul. The prayers were offered in all parts of the country and tribal areas in Pakistan.

Special prayers were offered for peace and stability in Afghanistan, with prayers leaders highlighting the importance of peace in their sermons.

The Eid is being celebrated today in other Muslim countries and Europe and the United States of America.

The event is celebrated on the 10th day of the last month of the Islamic year, following the completion of the course of Haji, the holy pilgrimage to Makkah.
The festival commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to follow Allah’s command to sacrifice his son Ishmael.
