MAIMANA (Pajhwok): At least four people were killed on Saturday after gunmen loyal to two rival illegal militia leaders clashed in northwestern Faryab province, an official said on Saturday.
The gunbattle broke out in the morning in Qarayee area of Almar district between rival commanders Amin Baig and Ghulam Dastagir, the district chief said.
Mohammad Saleh Saleh told Pajhwok Afghan News Amin Baig was planning to kill Dastagir, who preempted the assassination bid and ambushed his rival’s armed supporters.
Four fighters, including one from Dastagir’s side, were killed during the clash. Another two gunmen and a-12-year-old boy were wounded. A supporter of Baig was captured.
Saleh said Baig was a member of the Jamiat-i-Islami party and Dastagir was a pro-government commander. The clash was part of their long-running dispute, he said.
Baig warned the fight would continue until his rival released his supporter, Khanzada, who he said was taking revenge for his brother’s killing by Dastagir three years ago.
About 20 people have been killed so far during clashes between the two commanders in the district over the past few years.
