GHAZNI CITY (Pajhwok): The spy service on Tuesday said its operatives had detained 18 individuals involved in terrorist activities, kidnappings and murders in southern Ghazni province.
The men were detained during an operation conducted by intelligence officials, the National Directorate of Security or NDS said in a statement.
The statement did not reveal where the operation was conducted, but said the detainees included 11 terrorists.
The terrorists were involved in attacks on government officials and in the killing of a provincial council member, Zakia Rahimi, an army officer and a municipality worker, the release said.
NDS chief for Ghazni Ali Ahmad Mubariz said the suspected terrorists had been arrested in three days. He said some of the terrorists used suppressed guns to kill their targets.
In western Herat province, 1,907 crimes were reported during the past one month, said Syed Gul Agha Hashimi, the Criminal Investigation Department head.
He told a press conference in Herat City the reported crimes included kidnappings, killings, drug smuggling and sexual attacks.
Hashimi said police had so far investigated 1,572 cases and detained 2,349 suspects, including 151 women, in connection with the cases.
Statistics of criminal activities are revealed at a time when residents complain about growing insecurity in Herat that borders Iran.
