KABUL and the number would surge up to 15,000 after 4,000 fresh troops were deployed.
“Under the new, simplified accounting methodology, the current total forces number in Afghanistan is approximately 11,000. This does not include any potential future adjustments the Secretary of Defense may make in order to accomplish the president's new strategy for South Asia,” said Marine Lt Gen Kenneth McKenzie, Director of Joint Staff.
The general added, 4,000 more soldiers, including Special Forces and Intelligence personnel, would be dispatched to Afghanistan soon.
The troops surge in Afghanistan is part of President Trump new strategy for Afghanistan and South Asia which he had recently announced.
