Doha meeting aims direct govt-Taliban talks: Zakhilwal

KABUL.

Talking to Pajhwok on a Doha-bound flight from Kabul, Zakhilwal said the meeting was aimed at pushing for direct talks which he said should be held this month between the Taliban and the Afghan government.

Brokered by Germany and Qatar, the two-day all-Afghan talks will begin tomorrow. Afghan delegates comprising politicians, women activists on Saturday left Kabul for Doha to attend the dialogue.

“We want this meeting to go beyond dialogue. The Taliban would present their and we would present our stance. There would be discussion on various aspects of peace,” the former ambassador to Pakistan said.

He said all participants of the meeting had been invited in their personal capacity and government officials were also attending it in personal capacity.

“We want the system to be preserved. Our effort is that it should be a purely Afghan sitting and all speak about Afghanistan.”
