GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Two projects of Citizen Charter and National Food Package (NFP) worth 439m afghanis have been inaugurated in Gardez, the capital of southeastern Paktia province.
Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) Director Shamim Khan Katawazai visited Gardez to attend the inaugural ceremony.
He said Paktia needed development projects and the government was committed to honouring its promises in this regard.
Abdul Hadi Ahmadzai, the National Citizen Charter chief, said the programme would be implemented at a cost of 254 million afghanis.
The National Food Package (NFP) program would cost 185 million afghanis. As many as 23,000 families would benefit from the NFP program in Paktia, Ahmadzai added.
“These programmes will be implemented by 30 development councils in five police districts and six villages,”
“Public development projects for constructing roads, streets, parks, electricity facilities and women empowerment would be implemented in the province,” Ahmadzai said.
The IDLG director said, Paktia needed a greater development effort and serious work was required to address the problems and keep the promises held out to the people of the province.
Katawazai promised two more projects would be executed within the framework of the Gardez Municipality to resolve problems of the city.
“The NFP would cover 95pc people with aid from the National Citizen Charter directly delivered to families and no third party would be involved in the distribution process; most of our future programs would be implemented directly,” Katawazai added.
Governor Halim Fidaee, meanwhile hailed the projects as economically efficient. He believed Paktia needed more attention from the government.
Colonel Zafar, a tribal elder promised public cooperation on implementation of these programmes. He said a master plan was required for the development of Gardez.
Work on the Gardez ring road, activation of the Industrial park, development of the health and education sectors and preparation of a master plan for the city are major demands of Paktia residents.
