Wolesi Jirga committee to watch peace efforts

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Wolesi Jirga has constituted a committee to have a more direct involvement in efforts to bring peace and stability to the country.

Speaker Mir Rahman Rahmani, who heads the 21-member body, said both the government and the Taliban were seeking to grab power.

The parliamentary panel would encourage the parties to achieve real peace, he promised. The lower house should be directly involved in the peace process, he remarked.

“The Wolesi Jirga should identify party delaying the negotiations. The legislature should look at the claims made by both sides,” he added.

The speaker claimed having access to the draft of an interim administration. While hailing the draft as a positive move, he opined the plan had to be inclusive.

Rahmani said the plan, which was reportedly drawn up by the US and the Taliban, had reached him, “We welcome it because it mentions continuity of the current system and the national assembly.

Members of the Wolesi Jirga committee plans to get input from political figures and civil society representatives before travelling to Doha for talks with the two negotiating delegations.
