Turkey meeting may not bear fruit: NDS Chief

KABUL (Pajhwok): Head of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) Ahmad Zia Seraj on Sunday said Turkey Conference on peace may not produce positive outcome as the there is no change in the Taliban behavior.

Briefing the Wolesi Jirga Commission for Defence and Internal Security Spymaster Seraj said the people of Afghanistan are hopeful that Turkey Conference on Afghan peace would yield positive outcome, but he is not.

NDS Chief Ahmad Zia Seraj, Acting Interior Minister Hayatullah Hayat, Assistant Army Chief Gen. Iqbal Ali Naderi summoned by the Defence and Internal Security Commission today (Sunday).

Internal Security Commission Head Khan Agha Rezaee said security situation deteriorated with every passing day and security force and civilians’ casualties were on the high as well.

Some other lawmakers also complained against growing insecurity, targeted attacks and incidents of insecurity on the highways and demanded information regarding the preparation of security forces for these challenges.

NDS Chief Seraj said the Taliban increased violence after Doha Agreement and tried to transfer their defence bases currently located in Quetta and Peshawar to Helmand and Kandahar provinces.

“Security forces rendered sacrifices for the security and safety of the people and they were fully prepared to ensure the safety of masses,” he said.

He said in post-Doha Agreement era, the Taliban conducted 20,600 operations nationwide killing over 20,000 people and handicapping 11,000 others.

He also informed lawmakers about security forces preparation for the protection of country’s highways and added: “People are hopeful for upcoming Turkey Conference but I am not hopeful because the Taliban have not changed, until their mindset doesn’t change it would be difficult that the people of Afghanistan could reach durable peace.”

Acting Interior Minister Hayatullah Hayat said security plans had been prepared for provinces at high security threat and areas where targeted attacks are happening.

He told lawmakers: “Forging peace is the responsibility of politicians, security is our responsibility. Security forces are ready to ensure the safety of masses until peace is restored.”

He said Interior Ministry in collaboration with other security organs had prepared a plan for the security of highways and this will bear positive result.

Assistant Armey Chief Gen. Naderi briefed the lawmaker about plane prepared for 10 provinces that are at high security threat and added the plan would be implement in the near future.
