KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 78 new positive COVID-19 cases and two deaths have been recorded in Afghanistan in the last 24 hours, the Ministry of Public Health said on Thursday.

The ministry said 2,369 people underwent tests during the past 24 hours and the virus was detected in 78 people, pushing the overall tally to 57,612.

Of the fresh cases, 26 were recorded in Laghman, 14 in Kabul, 13 in Nangarhar, four each in Kunar and Helmand, three each in Herat, Kandahar and Badakhshan, two each in Baghlan and Nimroz and one each in Takhar, Kunduz, Logar and Bamiyan provinces.

At least 61 individuals recovered from the pandemic during the period, taking the total recoveries to 52,083.

The MoPH in a statement said two individuals died of the virus in the past 24 hours, pushing the overall death toll to 2,535.

The global infection tally has reached 138.9 million, with 111.6 million recovering and nearly three million losing lives to the infection.
