ASADABAD (Pajhwok): Agriculture officials in eastern Kunar province on Sunday said they had started building 2,000 orchards in Sarkano and KhasKunar districts of the province at a cost of $114,673 for women to help improve their economy.
Mullah Ezatullah, director of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock Department of Kunar, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the project was being implemented by Afghanistan’s Next Generations NGO which is funded by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
He said the gardens were being built to improve the economy of rural women in the province.
He added that 100 poor women in Narang and Chawki districts were also given a goat each with the financial support of the organization.
Zahida, a resident of Chamari village in Khas Kunar district, told Pajhwok she had built an orchard close to her house in cooperation with the agriculture department. She said the orchard would help improve her family’s economy.
Ibrahim Mamond, a representative of the NGO in Kunar, also told Pajhwok that they were building orchards for 2,000 women in Sarkano and KhasKunar districts with the financial support of the FAO.
He added that entitled women for gardening have been selected by the district committee.
Mamond said that the project was launched on August 1, 2021 and would complete in late February.
