KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Residents of southern Kandahar province ask the government to provide them with work opportunities as assistance only could not address their problems.

Basir Ahmad, a resident of 9th police district of Kandahar city, is one of the thousands of individuals who were jobless over the past seven months and could not find work to make a living for his family.

Ahmad is the sole bread winner for his 11-member family. He told Pajhwok Afghan News that they received food and non-food items in assistance once.

Mohammad Reza, another resident of Kandahar city, said in addition to humanitarian assistance, men and women should be provided with job opportunities.

He said the recent situation had badly affected people and they had no enough money to even start a small business and the other problem was that factories, firms, offices and other places could not offer jobs.

Marhama, a resident of Kandahar city, said she had been working with an organization in handicrafts section in cooperation with the women affairs department but currently she was jobless.

Abdul Salam Baryalai, director of economic department, told Pajhwok they were striving to provide job opportunities to jobless people in order they do not rely on assistance only.
