NEILI (Pajhwok): A drug addict from the Khadir district of central Daikundi province has expressed disappointment over his addiction and said rebuilding a successful and prosperous life seemed to be a dream for him.
Musa Sadiqi, 34, lived with his family in Iran and has nothing apart from bad memories in the neighboring country.
Narrating his story to Pajhwok Afghan News reporter, Sadiqi said from the past 26 years he had been addicted to drug.
“I got addicted to drugs in Iran, I started from opium, I wished to bring up my children but instead I myself destroyed my life.”
He said first he was encouraged by his freinds to consume drugs and with the passage of time he became a full-blown addict.
"Everything is in your hand, it is true that bad freinds bring bad things to you but one can distence himself from bad people and it is in your own hand."
Sadiqi was sidelined by his family after addicting to drugs and finally he ended up in the streets and sub-streets of Neili City, the provincial capital of Daikundi province.
"Now I don't have money to return to my family and the ability to quit drug addiction," said a disappointed Sadiqi.
He also complained that people did not see and treat them like human beings and often harrassed and humaliated them.
He said: “People believe that we addicts are always unconscious and unaware of our surrounding but it is not the case, we truly understand how other people are living and how a bad life we are having.”
Sadiqi often tried to quit addiction but he was unable because according to him all his body parts ached if he did not take drug.
He said he had referred to drug addicts’ rehabilitation centre many times but after rehabilitation he again became addict and the reason was separation from his family.
He acknowledged that in the past few months he and his friends were beaten, adding that government personnel beat and torture drug suppliers.
“People search for their stolen items among drug addicts and they humiliate us,” he said.
Sadiqi who lives under a bridge in Neili says he expected people walking on the bridge that they will offer them food because he himself could not dare walking through streets and roads.
He said from the past 26 years he had been separated from his family and nobody from his family ever searched for him.
He is still hopeful that one day his family will find him and after rehabilitation he will rejoin with his family.
Back in 2011, the number of drug addicts in Daikundi province was declared over 40,000 on the basis of a UN survey in the province.
Health officials claim 30 percent of the drug addicts in Daikundi province are females.
According to health officials Khadir, Shahristan and Miramour districts have more drug addicts compared to other districts of Daikundi.
