4 months into academic year, students without textbooks

QALA-I-NAW (Pajhwok): Some residents of western Badghis province say around four months into the new academic year, school students have not yet received textbooks.

Mohammad Fahim, a resident of the 9^th grade in Qadis district, said: “Four months into their academic year, we are yet to get textbooks.”

He said lack of textbooks had created many problems for schoolchildren, who had been unable to properly learn their lessons.

Najibullah, another student, said: “I’m a 10^th grader, facing a shortage of textbooks. I want the government to deliver textbooks to schools, especially in districts, at the earliest possible.”

He hoped the problem would be addressed with a sense of urgency by the officials concerned.

Nisar Ahmad Akbari, a lecturer at the Badghis University, called the shortage of textbooks worrisome. He warned it would lead to problems for students.

He believed the government must take concrete measures to motivate families and their children to acquire education and provide them all possible facilities.

“There is no doubt that the lack of textbooks has negatively affected the educational system, especially in districts where many families had lost hope. Students are losing the initiative and are feeling alienated from education,” he remarked.

Maulvi Mohibullah Ehsan, director of education, told Pajhwok the issue would be resolved after the printing of textbooks.

Recently the director recalled, 500,000 textbooks had been printed and delivered to them. The book distribution process would be launched in the capital and districts soon.
