Women in Kabul demand reopening of girls high schools

KABUL (Pajhwok): A number of women in Kabul on Sunday asked the government to reopen girls schools above sixth grade.

Holding a protest meeting, the women said the government should not deprive a large segment of the society from education.

Addressing the gathering, one participant Aino Abzek said there were women who were without a breadwinner and confining such women to homes was a great injustice with them.

Another participant, Razia Sahar, also said the government should reopen girls schools above sixth grade as soon as possible. She said education was women’s fundamental right and no one could deprive them of this right.

She believed the society would encounter numerous problems in future if girls were deprived of education.

Similar views were expressed by other participants and asked the government to reopen girls high and secondary schools.

Government officials have recently said nothing about the reopening of girls schools above sixth grades.

However, earlier the Ministry of Education had said no decision had been made so far about the reopening girls schools above sixth graded. A plan was being prepared in this regard and the outcome of the strategy would be shared with the people, the ministry had said.
