KABUL (Pajhwok): The deputy prime minister for economic affairs says all former military bases in the country will be converted into special economic zones.
Abdul Ghani Baradar’s office tweeted: “To strengthen the economy, former military bases of foreign forces in Afghanistan are being converted into special economic zones.”
Following a decision by the Economic Commission, a joint committee led by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry would conduct a comprehensive assessment of practical work.
The tweet added the military bases were located in Parwan, Kandahar, Nangarhar, Herat, Balkh, Kabul and some other provinces.
These bases are equipped with necessary facilities. Based on preliminary research, they are suitable for hosting special economic zones.
Special economic zones were an established global mechanism to attract foreign investments, take strides towards industrialsation, create work opportunities and ensure economic development, the deputy premier’s office concluded.
