Japan pledges $10m to help former poppy farmers

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Japanese government is providing USD 10 million in partnership with UNODC to ensure alternative livelihoods for former poppy farmers in Afghanistan, the country’s embassy in Kabul said.

On X, the embassy said the amount was also aimed at providing drug use prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and reintegration services for the most vulnerable communities in Badakhshan, Helmand and Kandahar.

“We will continue to support counternarcotics efforts by Afghan people!, “ the Japanese embassy said.

The Islamic Emirate has repeatedly asked different countries and organizations to help Afghan farmers find alternative source of income after abandoning poppy cultivation.
