JALALABAD (Pajhwok): A survey has been launched to detect poliovirus on the outskirts of Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province, a statement said on Tuesday.

The Environmental Health Protection team, the representatives of the Immunization Department and the World Health Organization, took samples from polluted water in different areas of Jalalabad city to detect the polio virus.

The Department of Health in a statement said samples would be sent to the central laboratory to determine the results to detect and respond to the polio virus in the suspected areas.

The sample collection took place at a time when a polio vaccination drive was planned for next Monday in Jalalabad.

Public Health Department Director Mawlavi Aminullah Sharif on Monday held a meeting with Governor Mawlavi Azizullah Musta and provided information regarding the preparedness for the administration of polio vaccination.

He also sought the support of the provincial administration for the successful implementation of polio vaccination.

Mawlavi Sharif said following the direction of Amir-ul-Momineen after this polio vaccination the campaign would be conducted in Mosques and guestrooms and before campaign 2,000 public awareness volunteers would spread information about the place and starting time of vaccination.

He said human resources shortage in the area of vaccination had been prevented and 18,000 more personnel had been recruited with the support of assisting organisations.
