GARDEZ (Pajhwok): The Information and Culture Department in southeaster Paktika province has identified and registered 153 historical sites and monuments over the last three years.
According to officials, only 20 historical sites had been registered in the province during the previous government.
Information and Culture Director Mullah Mohammad Amin Huzifa told Pajhwok Afghan News a total 181 historical sites were identified in the province in the last three years.
"So far, 153 of these sites have been officially surveyed, registered, and documented," he said.
The registered sites include ancient fortresses, shrines, and other historically significant locations, some of which date back hundreds of years.
Meanwhile, local residents have emphasized the preservation and restoration of these historical landmarks.
Mohammad Aziz, a resident of Sharana, the provincial capital, told Pajhwok: "Many historical sites exist both in the center and in districts. However, due to lack of attention, they have either deteriorated or are at risk of destruction."
He urged government authorities to prioritize the restoration and protection of these heritage sites.
The Information and Culture Department says that efforts are ongoing to identify and register more historical sites across the province.
