Survey finds widespread AI use among Afghan youth

KABUL (Pajhwok): A survey shows that 88 percent of young people in Afghanistan are familiar with artificial intelligence (AI), and of these, more than two-thirds (66.6 percent) are regular users.

The survey was conducted by the media outlet “Salam Afghanistan” and Salam Watandar Radio under the title “Presentation of the National Survey Results on Artificial Intelligence and Afghan Youth: Examination of Usage, Advisory Role, and Social Impacts Among Youth”, and was released on Monday.

The field survey was carried out over eight months, covering 1,154 respondents from 32 provinces of Afghanistan, including 50.6 percent men and 49.4 percent women.

According to findings presented by journalist Amin Habibi Tabar of Salam Watandar Radio, artificial intelligence has expanded across different segments of society.

The report states that 84.1 percent of young respondents have used AI at least once for seeking advice, indicating that it has become an advisory tool.

The survey also found that 82 percent of users said consultation with friends and relatives has decreased, while 58.1 percent expressed concern about the “mechanisation” of decision-making.

Tabar noted that 90 percent of respondents have a moderate level of familiarity with AI, while only 3.3 percent are specialists in the field. Some respondents also said they had no knowledge of AI.

He added that 35 percent of respondents use AI daily, while 31.6 percent use it several times a week.

The survey shows that ChatGPT and Gemini are the most widely used AI tools among youth, with 71.3 percent usage, while educational applications rank second with 9.5 percent.

Findings also indicate that 66.8 percent of respondents have higher education, with most being literate university graduates.

Enayatullah Alkozai, spokesman for the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, expressed appreciation for the survey.

He added that the ministry’s technical experts are conducting research on artificial intelligence and are working to ensure its safe use while addressing existing concerns.

Alkozai said technical teams are also working to mitigate the negative impacts of AI.
