HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Afghanistan’s 107th Independence Day was marked with a special ceremony in western Herat province, with participants describing the country’s independence as the result of Afghans’ struggles and sacrifices.

The ceremony was attended by officials of the provincial Information and Culture Department, religious scholars, cultural figures and members of the public.

August 19, corresponding to 28 Asad in the Afghan solar calendar, marks the 107th anniversary of Afghanistan’s independence — a day considered one of the country’s significant historical events.

Speaking at the ceremony, Herat Information and Culture Director Mawlawi Atiqullah Azizi said commemorating Independence Day was a tribute to the courage and sacrifices of Afghans who had defended their country.

He said Afghans had resisted major powers over the past century and had defeated three major global powers.

“Some leaders of the Islamic Emirate participated at different stages in jihad and resistance against Soviet and United States forces,” he said.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Information and Culture, former mujahideen Wakil Ahmad Mujahid and Ustad Sayed Ahmad Qatali also addressed the ceremony.

They said the Afghan people’s victories over major powers were the result of resistance, steadfastness and divine support.

Participants at the event also stressed the importance of preserving the historical values associated with Afghanistan’s independence and passing them on to future generations.
