KABUL (Pajhwok): UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres left New York for Islamabad on Sunday night for a four-day visit, the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported.
During the visit, Guterres is expected to discuss Pakistan’s mediatory role in the US-Iran conflict and its diplomatic efforts to support negotiations between the two countries.
APP reported that Guterres will meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, President Asif Ali Zardari and other senior Pakistani officials.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Guterres had recognised Pakistan’s role in supporting diplomatic efforts and bringing parties together through dialogue and mediation.
Guterres will also visit Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to learn about the country’s progress in disaster preparedness and response following the devastating floods of 2022.
He is also scheduled to visit the headquarters of the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), which monitors the Line of Control in disputed Kashmir.
Guterres is expected to return to New York after completing his four-day visit.
