FAIZABAD (Pajhwok) Thirty-four people died in traffic accidents in northeastern Badakhshan province this solar year compared to 20 deaths last year, an official said Sunday.
Traffic Director Maj. Hafeezi told Pajhwok Afghan News another 35 people, including women and children, were wounded in this year’s mishaps while 17 people had been wounded in last year’s crashes.
He blamed bad condition of roads and out of order traffic signals as major factors behind accidents in Badakhshan.
Hafeezi estimated the number vehicles plying roads in Faizabad, the provincial capital, between 5, 000 and 6, 000.
However, Abdul Malik Roufi, an official at the provincial hospital, said they had been delivered 381 people injured in accidents last year.
Of them 317 were discharged after treatment, 64 admitted, four died inside hospital and two on their way to hospital.
He added this year they had received 532 victims of traffic accidents with 129 hospitalized, 403 sent homes back after treatment and 13 died.
