KABUL): Several caches of explosives and weapons were seized by Afghan and coalition forces during a string of joint operations in several provinces, the alliance said on Thursday.
A joint force confiscated heavy machine guns, AK-47 assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades during an operation in search of a Taliban leader in the Shirin Tagab district of northern Faryab province.
A statement from the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said the insurgent leader, the deputy military coordinator for Faryab, provided explosives to militants and planning attacks.
The security force engaged numerous insurgents who exited their compound. Responding to the direct threat, the force killed the armed insurgents, it said.
A cache of bomb-making materials were discovered and safely destroyed on site during a separate operation in Dasht-i-Qala district of northern Takhar province on Thursday, the statement said.
The joint force conducted the operation in pursuit of an Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan leader accused of the Dec. 25, 2011 suicide attack that killed an Afghan government official.
The leader is responsible for the movement of weapons, explosives and suicide bombers throughout the area, the statement said. Multiple suspected insurgents were also detained during the operation.
In southern Kandahar province, an Afghan and coalition security force detained multiple suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban explosives facilitator in the Shah Wali Kot. The facilitator distributes explosives and weapons to fighters in Kandahar city for use in attacks throughout the area, the multinational force said.
A cache of bomb-making materials was confiscated and several suspected insurgents detained during an operation in Sabari district of southeastern Khost province.
The joint force captured a Haqqani network facilitator who distributed weapons and explosives and planned attacks against Afghan forces during the operation, it said.
Multiple weapons were seized and two suspected insurgents detained during an operation in Mota Khan district of neighbouring Paktika province.
An Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban facilitator during an operation in Charkh district of central Logar province. One additional suspected insurgent was detained during the operation.
An individual armed with a grenade was killed in Rodat district of eastern Nangarhar province during an operation against a Taliban leader.
An Afghan-led and coalition-supported security force discovered a home-made explosives cache in Muqur district of southern Ghazni province on Wednesday, ISAF said. A cache consisted of 352 pounds (160 kilograms) of HME prepared for use in improvised explosive devices was also captured.
A drug cache was discovered by a combined Afghan and coalition force during an operation in Farah-Rud district in Farah province. The cache consisted of approximately 233 pounds (106 kilograms) of opium.
The security force also seized several firearms and detained one suspected insurgent during the operation.
