QALAT (PAN): The first-ever private radio station, known as Tarang, went on the air in southern Zabul province on Thursday, officials said.
The FM radio started test transmissions to meet local demand for independent programmes, said Meshrano Jirga Chief Complaints Commission head, Dr Zalmay Zabuli.
Also the owner of the radio station, Zabuli told Pajhwok Afghan News he had set up the impartial radio station with his own money to fill the vacuum.
Governor Ashraf Nasiri expressed his pleasure over the inauguration of the radio station and promised support for it.
Tarang Executive Director Bismillah Pakhtun said the radio’s transmissions could be heard in Qalat, the provincial capital, and adjoining areas.
Initially, the radio would air programmes for four hours a day on education, social, literary and entertainment issues, he added.
