PUL-I-ALAM (PAN.
The warning came at a gathering of tribal elders and youth coming all the way from various towns to the provincial capital, Pul-i-Alam. Government officials and provincial council members were also in attendance.
Participants vowed unflinching support to the government for executing development projects and warned the rebels of armed retaliation if they attempted to disrupt the uplift process.
Haji Duad Melma, the Pul-i-Alam Development Council head, said the government had been unable so far to initiate development schemes in Logar due to insecurity created by the insurgents.
“Rebel activity has ruined our lives, depriving us of even basic facilities,” the elder said, adding they would negotiate peace with the militants and if they failed to shun violence, the last option would be picking up guns.
Another elder, Mohammad Karim, said Logar dwellers had run out of patience with insurgent operations, unemployment and lack of basic facilities. “We cannot afford living anymore with these problems which the government has failed to resolve.” He said residents wanted development projects and an end to the insurgency.
Provincial council chief Dr. Abdul Wali Wakil hoped if such gatherings continued, peace would be restored. He said the gathering offered the government a chance to strengthen itself and establish close liaison with the people in executing its plans.
