Nangarhar tribes cease land dispute

JALALABAD (PAN): Bloody at times, a long-lasting dispute over ownership of thousands of acres of land between two sub tribes of the Shinwari clan was resolved as tribal elders from various provinces and senior central government officials gathered in eastern Nangahar province, an official said on Monday.

Alisherkhel and Sepai tribes elders attended the regional jirga convened by Asadullah Wafa, the Complaints Commission head at the President Office, to resolve the dispute between them over 15,000 acres of land.

Wolesi Jirga members and tribal elders coming all the way from 10 provinces were in attendance at the traditional assembly that took place on Sunday, Wafa told Pajhwok Afghan News.

“Both sides gave us complete authority to make a decision, we made it and accepted by the two tribes,” he said.  He said they decided that the land be divided into three portions, with Sepai tribe receiving two parts and the third going to Alisherkhel.

But Malik Syed Hakim, an Alisherkhel elder, expressed his opposition to the decision, saying it benefited one side.

Wafa insisted the judgment was impartial and was taken after thoroughly assessing the issue.

Governor Gul Agha Sherzai, expressing his pleasure over the territorial conflict resolution, warned the two tribes against violating the decision.
