In his statement on the occasion of International Women’s Day issued by the British Embassy in Kabul, Hailey said the lives of millions of women across Afghanistan had improved, thanks to joint efforts of many in Afghanistan and its international partners, not least Afghan women themselves.
“The day is a good opportunity to celebrate those gains, but also to reaffirm our commitment that we cannot allow them to be lost. Indeed we must build on those gains in the years ahead,” he remarked.
The British envoy said he recognised both the security transition and the prospect of peace negotiations created uncertainty. “I can understand those feelings are particularly acute for Afghan women, who remember so vividly the injustices of the past and are so affected by the horrors of conflict,” Hailey said.
He recalled President Karzai had made it clear that the peace process must work in the interests of Afghan women, not against them.
“The UK warmly welcomes that commitment and will remain a champion for the rights of Afghan women,” the acting ambassador said.
