KABUL‘s Chief of Army Staff Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani had opposed the creation of Afghan national army when he visited the US in 2010, a Pakistani TV reported.
Kayani, who travelled to the US in October 2010, met with US Central Command Commander Gen. David Petraeus at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla.
The Pakistani private TV channel, Geo, cited a new report published by Foreign Policy magazine that the Pakistani general told American officials that the Afghan army would eventually collapse and break into militias that will be a problem for Pakistan.
Kayani had asked the Americans to stay away from building an Afghan army and instead negotiat an exit with the Taliban.
The report said Kayani told American military officials that they would not succeed in building a disciplined Afghan army and asked the US to leave Afghanistan quietly and don’t create problems for Pakistan.
He said the US had neither been successful in winning the war in Afghanistan nor bringing the rebels to the negotiation table.
Political analyst Mohammad Hassan Haqyar said Pakistan had a role in preventing the creation of Afghan army.
He also said the US had not been able to create a strong army in terms of having sophisticated weaponry and equipment. Haqyar said the US wanted an exit from Afghanistan by employing every tactics.
