Wardak stands down as presidential advisor

KABUL): Gen. Abdul Rahim Wardak, advisor to the president on military affairs, on Wednesday announced his resignation.

Wardak was unseated as minister of defence by the Wolesi Jirga and insecurity in the country.

Following the vote of no-confidence, President Hamid Karzai appointed Wardak as his senior advisor on military reform and equipment.

In his resignation letter, Wardak said: “I trust in God and respect your constant support to me over the years in discharging my duties in different positions. Today, I announce my resignation as senior presidential advisor.”

Wardak promised in the resignation letter he would continue to serve his people and country. “I will use all my ability to keep serving my people.”

Although the ex-defence minister gave no specific reason for his resignation, he recently received an information kit on next year’s presidential election.
