KABUL): Kabul University Students gathered in this capital city on Friday, urging former US ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad to contest the upcoming presidential elections.
The students from various faculties gathered in front of the university in a move to convince Khalilzad into joining the battle for the presidency in April 2014.
Speaking on the occasion, one student Nizamuddin Nazari said Khalilzad had worldwide reputation for his political acumen and had immense ability to steer the country out of the current crisis.
Afghans should take advantage of Khalilzad’s experience and capabilities, he believed, asking the diplomat to jump into the electoral fray.
Muhammad Aqa Nazari, another participant, told Pajhwok Afghan News Khalilzad was a suitable choice for the top office that was why they wanted to swing behind him.
Khalilzad is an American citizen of Afghan origin, having served as US ambassador to Afghanistan. He is reportedly interested in contest the elections.
Four days back, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) had announced all aspirants should register with it before October 4. The panel said the date would not be extended.
