MAIDAN SHAHR (Pajhwok): Officials on Monday said all polling centres in central Maidan Wardak province would stay open during the June 14 presidential runoff election.
Governor Abdul Majeed Khogyani told Pajhwok Afghan News that polling centres in all districts would be open as demanded by local residents.
He said he had held meetings with delegations coming from various towns and they had demanded no polling site should be closed because the people wanted to vote in the election.
The governor said tribal elders had launched awareness-creating programmes in several districts and security officials had adopted elaborate security measures.
Meanwhile, police chief Col. Khalil Andarabi said they had finalized security arrangements for the election.
He said police and other security organs were all poised to protect polling centres, saying they would not allow security officials to interfere in the electoral process.
Independent Election Commission (IEC) chief in Maidan Wardak Eng. Noorullah Paigham said they were fully prepared to hold the runoff election.
As requested by the Governor’s House and the masses, he said, the number of polling centres had been increased from the previous 389 to 462. He said they had enough electoral materials and staff for the election.
The IEC official acknowledged the previous round of elections had some problems but promised the mistakes would not be repeated.
