KABUL on Friday announced releasing a Russian pilot who was kidnapped by militants in April 2013 in the Azra district of central Logar province.
Previously, the insurgent movement said they would soon take a decision in line with their investigations on the fate of about 11 helicopter crewmembers, Turkish engineers and pilots in their captivity.
The Russian was kidnapped along with eight Turks, a Kyrgyz man and an Afghan after their helicopter made an emergency landing due to bad weather in Azra district.
Zabihullah Mujahid, the militant movement’s spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News they had freed the Russian along with Afghan two days back. He said the foreigner was taken ill recently.
In view of his medical condition and following an understanding with Russia, the ailing pilot was released, the spokesman added. The pilot has reportedly promised leaving Afghanistan immediately.
