ZARANJ (Pajhwok): The number of drug addicts in southwestern Nimroz province has surged to 10,000, including 6,000 women last year, an official said on Wednesday.
Dr. Noor Ahmad Sherzad, the public health director, said 50 percent of the addicted had those who returned Nimroz after spending time in Iran.
Meanwhile, the first-ever clinic for treatment of female drug addicts was inaugurated in Zaranj, the provincial capital of Nimroz. Dr. Khalilullah Kazami, in-charge of the facility said the clinic had ten beds.
He said women drug addicts would be treated and provided with free medical treatment.
There was need for joint cooperation by police, public health department, governor house and municipality to treat the addicted persons and counter the production and import of the illegal substance.
Sakina, a drug addict, said the government should stop selling of narcotics in the market. She said drug was easily available in offices, homes and hotels in zaranj, the provincial capital.
But deputy police chief Col. Rahmatullah Nasari said smuggling and selling of narcotics was strictly banned. He said if anyone found selling the banned drugs would be dealt in accordance with the law.
