CHARIKAR prisoners in central Parwan province have been on huger strike since last Thursday to protest what they call an inordinate delay in their release, an official said on Saturday.
Nadera Giya, the women affairs director, told Pajhwok Afghan News three of the protesting women had sewn up their lips. But the overall health of the strikers was not worrying, she said.
Some of the protesting women were imprisoned on murder charges, she said, adding the protestors sought implementation of the remission granted on International Women’s Days (March 8).
Prison Director Col. Abdul Wahid said in complaice with the presidential decree on March 8, one women had been released and three others had their jail terms slashed, but they were also hunger strike.
The official said the women had committed seriouse crimes such as murder and all of them did not deserve mercy. He did not allow journalists to meet the protesting women.
It is the first time that women have gone on hunger strike in Charikar jail. Around 600 criminals, including 20 women, are being held in the jail.
