GARDEZ (Pajhwok): The revenue of Gardez municipality went up by 34 percents this year, the mayor said on Monday, with city residents voicing satisfaction over its performance and management.

Inhabitants acknowledge the municipality had been more prompt in cleaning Gardez roads of snow this winter and addressing other problems.

Abdullah Hamim, a resident of Gardez, told Pajhwok Afghan News the municipality had markedly improved its activities and management by focusing areas that were ignored in the past.

“We feel like having an active municipality now. In the past, the existence of the municipality was never felt; we want it to further improve its programmes,” he said.

A Gardez-based shopkeeper, Roohullah Ahmadi, also expressed his happiness with the municipality’s performance. He said municipal workers were cleaning city roads, streams and garbage bins on time.

“We have no problem in this winter as we had in the past, there was continues snowfalls this year but municipality officers cleaned them from roads on time, we can say that our municipality has significantly improved,” he said.

Esmatullah Khalid, who was appointed a few months ago as Gardez mayor, said he had chalked out cleanliness programmes for the city in the winter and any other seasons.

He has purchased four vehicles for 4.6 million afghanis for improving cleanliness services. “We also have plans for making the city green, building a guesthouse, a recreational park, car parks, slaughterhouses, roads and commercial areas.”

The schemes would be implemented when the weather got warm, Khalid announced, saying the revenue of his department — taxes from markets, shops and other commercial areas — had increased by 35 percent.

“We collected 9.9 million afghanis more revenue this year, our total income works out at nearly 40 million afghanis,” the mayor explained.

For the first time, five municipal districts of the provincial capital and the Gardez Urban Council, involving representatives from various areas of the city, had also been set up.
