Having fought against the government over the past decade and a half, the HIA recently signed a landmark peace agreement with the administration of President Ashraf Ghani.
Under the deal, HIA embraced the Afghanistan constitution, dismantled its armed wing and severed ties with all militant groups. Subsequently, the UN removed its sanctions on Hekmatyar and allowed him to travel freely.
