KABUL Minister Mohammad Mirwais Balkhi on Saturday said a has been devised plan to give schoolteachers apartments instead of land plots in future.

Balkhi made the announcement while addressing a gathering marking Teacher Day in Kabul. He said distribution of land plots was not economic for the teachers.

He said despite 46,000 acres of land distribution to teachers for housing, the problem remained unresolved.

He said his ministry has developed a plan based on which teachers would get apartments instead of land plots.

A fund has also been created for teachers, so they would be able to get loans when they need it, he added.

Balkhi said the education ministry was also working to improve teachers’ capacity and avoid hiring high school graduates as teachers.

He said 20,000 high school graduate teachers would be introduced for higher education this ongoing year. He said the ranks of 97,000 teachers promoted this year.

Balkhi added salaries of teachers would be also increased under the new government and the ministry was currently working on such a plan.

Students’ health checkup section would be created this year and the service would keep in contact students with their parents about their health and treatment for diseases.

Abdul Wasay Fayez, secretary of Kabul Teachers Council, asked the MoE to shorten teaching hours and increase teachers’ salaries.

Aziza, a teacher at Ghazi High School of Kabul, said that the number of students in a class should be reduced so teachers could properly teach.
