KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani and US Special Representatives for Afghan Peace Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad on Wednesday evening discussed range of issues and ceasefire.
US special envoy Zalmay Khalilzad arrived in Kabul on Wednesday to discuss latest peace efforts and ways of resuming peace talks with Afghan government.
In a statement, the Presidential Palace said that President Ghani and Khalilzad discussed truce, Taliban’s safe havens outside the country and revival of peace talks.
President Ghani said that both issues (ceasefire and Taliban safe havens) should be taken seriously in order to advance the peace process, the source said.
Khalilzad’s visit comes just days after President Donald Trump visited US troops in Afghanistan for the Thanksgiving holiday and also met President Ashraf Ghani.
Trump and President Ghani meeting, raising hopes of progress toward an elusive peace deal with the Taliban. The Afghan government says it is ready for the revival of the talks, but only if it is given a seat at the table and the Taliban agrees to a ceasefire.
