PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): A renowned religious scholar has been gunned down along with his driver in Pakistan’s port city of Karachi, officials say.
Dr Adil Khan, who headed Karachi's leading seminary Jamia Farooqia, was the son of great scholar Maulana Saleemullah Khan, who founded the religious school in Shah Faisal Colony.
Police said armed pillion riders fired a volley of bullets at the Vigo car carrying Dr Adil after the vehicle stopped near a shopping centre. The cleric came under attack while purchasing sweets.
Dr Adil was pronounced dead after being evacuated to the Liaquat National Hospital, said Anjum Rizvi, spokesperson for the medical facility.
The scholar’s driver Maqsood Ahmed was also declared dead on arrival at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC).
A scholar from the Sunni Deobandi sect, Adil held a PhD in religious studies and had taught in Malaysia before returning to Karachi a few years ago after the death of his father.
