HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Health officials in western Herat province say 53 Covid-19 patients died of the infection in two hospitals during the past two weeks.
Public Health Department spokesman Mohammad Rafiq Shirzai told Pajhwok Afghan News the 53 coronavirus patients died in Shahid Basim and Shahid Razi Covid-19 hospitals, taking the total deaths in Herat to 346 including 98 women.
Shirzai stressed following coronavirus safety measures and said presently 91 coronavirus positive patients were admitted to Shahid Basim and Shahid Razi hospitals and 28 patients were in critical condition.
The provincial Public Health Department has so far registered 7,947 Covid-19 positive cases and 7,022 recoveries.
However, civil society activists say coronavirus fatality rate is much higher than reported by the public health department.
Jawad Amid, a civil society activist, told Pajhwok Afghan News most of coronavirus patients died in their homes and their deaths were not registered with the public health department.
Recently through social media platforms especially Facebook, people have been posting about coronavirus deaths in their areas.
Health officials request people to follow coronavirus safety measures in order to prevent the virus spread.
