Indonesia ready to host Afghan peace negotiations

KABUL (Pajhwok): Dr. Jusuf Kalla, the Indonesian Ulema Council chief and former vice president, says his country is ready to host the next round of intra-Afghan peace negotiations.

The High Council for National Reconciliation (HCNR) said Dr. Abdullah Abdullah met Dr. Jusuf Kalla and the team headed by him on Wednesday evening.

In a statement from HCNR, Kalla said the Afghanistan government believed Indonesia could be the peacemaker in the conflict-stricken country.

The HCNR chairman thanked Indonesia for supporting efforts for peace in Afghanistan. Abdullah referred the recent developments in the peace process and next round of talks

While underlining Kabul’s determination to restore permanent peace in the country, he called violence a source of concern and urged a permanent ceasefire.

Abdullah called for a significant reduction in violence, the reconciliation leader hailed Indonesia’s efforts for peace in Afghanistan. “You have a lot of experience and we are ready to utilize it”.

He also appreciated the Indonesian government for its willingness to host the intra-Afghan peace parleys — an offer Jakarta has held out several times.

Dr. Kalla described relations between the two countries are good and are based on mutual values and Indonesia opposes war and blood-shed in Afghanistan, also proposed cooperation in ensuring peace in Afghanistan.

Dr. Kalla emphasized on enhanced bilateral relations and proposed study opportunities for more Afghan students in country. He also suggested education on hajj for the Afghans.

Another report said the Afghan minister of hajj and religious affairs also met Dr. Kalla at the Presidential Palace.

The Indonesian government was ready to host the Afghan-led peace talks and facilitate dialogue between the Afghans and Taliban.

He promised Indonesia’s efforts for the Afghan peace process, security and development would continue and that Jakarta was willing to host a regional conference involving Afghanistan’s neighbours.
