Visiting Indonesian delegation asks Taliban to renounce violence

KABUL (Pajhwok): Indonesian Mohammadia Ulema Council Head Dr. Jusuf Kalla called on the Taliban to end fighting in Afghanistan, a statement from Presidential Palace said on Friday.

This was stated by Dr. Kalla during a meeting with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani on Thursday evening.

The Mohammadia Ulema Council head conveyed Indonesian president warm greetings to President Ashraf Ghani and to the people of Afghanistan.

“In the past two days we have met with leadership of Hajj and Religious Affairs Ministry, Commerce and Trade Ministry, national security advisor, members of reconciliation council and members of the Afghanistan Ulema Council,” said Kalla.

The purpose of the visit was that how could Indonesia help Afghanistan peace process.

He said Indonesia being a moderate Islamic nation has great experiences in peace process and was ready to support Afghanistan and share those experiences.

President Ghani in his remarks said that Indonesia is an influential Islamic nation and it has rich experience in peace process which could help Afghanistan achieve stability.

“Your experiences are not only beneficial for the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan but fruitful for the Taliban as well so they could choose the moderate way and renounce violence,” the president said.

The president thanked Indonesia for hosting the International Ulema Council and said the Ulema of the Islamic world termed fighting in Afghanistan illegitimate in which innocent Afghans suffer.
