KABUL (Pajhwok): Acting Minister of Information and Cultural Affairs TahirZaheer and Agha Khan Development Network (AKDN) representative Prince Herigi on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to rehabilitate the Musalla Minarets, which are in a dilapidated condition.

A statement from the Presidential Palace said Dr. Fazali, head of the Presidential Palace Administrative Affairs ,and a number of Cabinet members were present at  the MoU signing ceremony.

Fazli in his remarks expressed happiness over the MoU signing between the two parties and thanked AKDN on the behalf of President Ashraf Ghani.

He said technical assistance from AKDN to the Government of Afghanistan in the field of protection of historical monuments and their restoration was valuable in terms of quantity and quality.

He said the organization considered all international standards and value of historical preservation in restoration of cultural and historical monuments, he added.

Princess Heregi in her remarks said AKDN has been operating in Herat since 2004 and is working with the Afghan government to revitalize historic sites, including Herat Ekhtiaruddin Fort, Khajeh Abdullah Ansari Tomb and Chaharsooq Market.

She added they were trying to include the ancient city of Herat and the Musalla surrounding area in the trial list of world cultural heritage.
