Survey, design of 1,400 water projects completed: NWARA

KABUL (Pajhwok): Survey and designing of nearly 1,400 water projects has been completed and practical work on these projects would be launched next year, National Water Affairs Regulation Authority (NWARA) officials said on Thursday.

As part of government accountability programme, officials of the NWARA briefed the nation about their activities.

Reshad Hakeem, the finance and admin director at NWARA, said design and survey of 1373 water projects including dams, canals and dykes had been completed in 34 provinces.

He said last year a total of 464 water projects were surveyed and designed in which 188 were completed and work on 267 others was underway.

Hakeem said NWARA has major achievements in water management sector such as preparation of procedural rules, policy development for water beyond borders, policy development for flood and drought management and policy development for underground water and installation of 30 sub-stations in the five river zones.

Installation of 30 hydro metrology systems to determine the amount of rainfall, establishment of flood and drought warning system, connection of 75 hydrological stations to the telemetry system and regular collection of 141 stations to measure snow, construction of eight large dams, inclusion of 61 large and medium dams for economic and technical studies, and the conclusion of a contract for feasibility studies for the Lori Arghistan irrigation dam are also among the functions of this department.

He said their other activities included completion of 49 Chakdam projects in the five river zones, launching 119 similar projects and completing the design of 790 chakdams, 559 dams and river embankment.

He added during the outgoing solar year, NWARA spent its 90 percent development budget.
