JALALABAD (Pajhwok): In eastern Nangarhar province, efforts are underway to develop the local fish farming in order to meet domestic demand, an official said on Tuesday.
Syed Haumayon Gharibmal, spokesperson for the Nangarhar Canal Department, said since their department’s merger with the National Development Authority, they had increased concentration on how to improve local products and generate jobs.
He said besides other projects, a fish farming project was launched in the Samarkhel locality of Behsud district, which would help meet the local fish demand and discourage imports of fish from outside.
He said the project contained 20 water ponds for fishing and ten had been completed and the remaining would be completed at the end of this year.
Of the completed ponds, four were ready for use and as many as 6,000 fishes would be released in the ponds.
He said the purpose of the project was to stop the import of fish from outside. The project will also help generate jobs, he added.
