KABUL (Pajhwok): Italy has voiced its concern at escalating violence in Afghanistan, calling for an end to insecurity in the country.

Italian Defense Minister Lorenzo Guerini, who visited Kabul on Tuesday, expressed his concern in meetings with top Afghan leaders.

Guerini discussed the Afghan peace process, Italy’s military presence in Afghanistan, and bilateral relations with the Afghan officials.

He held talks with President Ashraf Ghani, Chairman of High Council for National Reconciliation Abdullah Abdullah and National Security Advisor Hamdullah Mohib.

At his meeting with Ghani, Guerini expressed his concerns over a spate of assassinations across Afghanistan and called for an immediate end to the violence.

A statement from the Presidential Palace said the Italian minister commended the bravery of the Afghan security forces in combating terrorism,

Guerini reiterated Italy’s commitment to continued assistance to Afghanistan and in terms of the presence of Italian forces in Afghanistan within the framework of NATO’s Resolute Support Mission.

Ghani said the people of Afghanistan and the world wanted a halt to the violence. He called upon the Taliban to understand that continued violence would prompt the Afghans and the world to mobilise against them.

Ghani also welcomed Italy’s support for development and economic programs in Afghanistan, particularly funding for the fourth part of the Khwaf-Herat railway project.

HCNR Chairman Abdullah said after meeting the visiting dignitary:: “We exchanged views on bilateral relations and the peace process. I thanked him and Italy for their continued support for Afghanistan, and a dignified and lasting peace. He assured me of Italy’s full support.”

In his meeting with Mohib, Guerini stressed the need for a real reduction in violence, progress in the Doha negotiations and Taliban cutting ties with terrorist groups.

“Mohib and Guerini agreed on the need to preserve the gains of the last two decades; to strengthen a unified, sovereign and democratic Afghanistan that is at peace; and to protect the rights of all Afghans, including those of women and minorities,” the National Security Council said.
