FAIZABAD (Pajhwok): Shurabak Hydroelectric Dam workers in northeastern Badakhshan province have gone on strike over not receiving their salaries for the last five months, warning not to return to their job until their wages are paid.

This comes as 98 percent construction work of the dam has been completed and the project is expected to be inaugurated in March if not delayed.

According to a Pajhwok Afghan News report, the dam project was started on Kukcha River in Faizabad city, capital of Badakhshan province in 2016 and its implementation cost is more than $48 million paid by Germany.

Officials at that time had said that the dam construction would help provide electricity to more than 11,000 families in Badakhshan.

Karimullah, a resident of third police district of Faziabad city, who works as driver in the dam since last two years, said that they did not receive their salaries of last five months.

He said all workers of the dam have been on strike for the last one week and they would not return to duty until their salaries were paid by the concerned company.

“We have not received our salaries of five months, we have families and we are currently faced with economic problems, Paiman Kar Company also known as (FIKA) should pay the salaries of all of its workers,” he added.

Meanwhile, Abdul Sammad, 38, a technical engineer in the dam, also complained about not receiving their salaries since five months.

A resident of Faryab province, Sammad said, “For God’s sake, we are poor people, we work to continue our life, we have not received our salaries since five months, how can we eat..”

He said all workers of the dam had decided not to return to their duties until their salaries were paid.

Hamidullah, an official of Shurabak Dam, said, “FIKA company had a legal issue with another company in 2011, that company opened a complaint against FIKA and the Afghan government locked our money in the bank.”

He said they would pay salaries of their workers once the problem was resolved.

Mohammad Zakaria Sawda, Badakhshan governor, told Pajhwok that he had talked with officials in the central government for finding a solution to the problem and efforts were on to resolve the issue and resume work on the dam.
