KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations Security Council has convened an emergency meeting for Friday (Aug 6) on escalating violence in Afghanistan.

Indian ambassador to the UN, TS Tirumurti made the announcement hours after Afghan Foreign Minister Hanif Atmar proposed a special Security Council session.

During a phone conversation with his Indian counterpart J. Shankar on Wednesday, he said the proposed meeting would take stock of the deteriorating situation in the country.

India Today quoted Tirumurti as saying: “India has been repeatedly cautioning against the possibility of terrorists gaining access to chemical weapons.”

While denouncing the attack on the UN office in western Herat province, the Security Council opposed the restoration of the “Islamic Emirate” in Afghanistan.

In a statement, members of the 15-nation body reaffirmed there is no military solution to the conflict in Afghanistan.

Earlier, Tirumurti ruled out the possibility of India sending peacekeeping forces to the war-devastated country.

A non-permanent member of the Security Council, India is holding the powerful body’s presidency for the current month.

Foreign Minister Atmar and United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) head Debrah Lyons will brief UNSC members.
