KABUL (Pajhwok): The government of Indian has decided to bring home its ambassador and his staff from Afghanistan with immediate effect.
The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson said on Tuesday morning the decision had been taken in view of the prevailing circumstances in Afghanistan.
“It has been decided that our ambassador in Kabul and his Indian staff will move to India immediately,” the spokesperson tweeted.
An Indian Air Force C-17 Globemaster remained airborne for a couple of hours after leaving the Kabul airport at around 7:30 am, according to a New Delhi-based news website.
Indian Ambassador Rudrendra Tandon, diplomatic personnel and Indian journalists were flown home from Kabul, the wire reported.
A day earlier, the Taliban turned away the group from the Hamid Karzai International Airport. However, they allowed to leave today.
The aircraft is expected to reach New Delhi at about 1 pm, the Hindustan Times reported. Several Indian citizens are still stranded in Kabul. They will be able to return home after the resumption of commercial flights.
